This pastel drawing is based on the speech, by Martin Luther King,
Jr., titled "What's your life blueprint?" Within this speech, given in
October 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. reminded young people
that they need to keep several principles in mind while mapping out
their lives. Things such as having dignity at all times,
determination, striving for excellence in whatever they do, climbing
towards their dreams no matter what gets in the way, and
remembering how important love, beauty, and justice are in this
world were just a few things he asked of the young people he spoke
to that day. The star being taken by the hand in the center of the
artwork represents those mentioned within the speech who Martin
Luther King, Jr. stated reached out and grabbed their stars from all
those in the sky. Those are the people he said make a difference in
the world.
This pastel, by Heidi Lyn, won the Martin Luther King, Jr. Award for
best MLK art from Ithaca College in January 2007 and was made
into Thank-you notes for the college faculty.
"Be a bush if you can't be a tree. If you can't be a
highway, just be a trail. If you can't be a sun, be a
star. For it isn't by size that you win or fail. Be the
best of whatever you are."
